What is a PS3?

A PS3, or Playstation 3 is a next generation gaming console that is being released by Sony. Before the PS3, there was the PS2 and the original Playstation. Both were very popular, and had more of a market share than Sega, Nintendo, and now Microsoft with their consoles.

There might be some color options, and there might not.

When will it be released?

It is expected to be released in the Spring of 2006, but this is most likely the release date for Japan. Expect the North American and European launches to be a little bit after that.

How much will it cost?

Estimates range from $300 to $400 US.

Will it be more powerful than the Xbox 360?

It's looking more and more like the PS3 will be at least slightly more powerful than the Xbox 360 both in graphics as well as processing.

Will it be as easy to design games for as the Xbox 360?

No. The Xbox 360 is at least slightly easier to develop for. The whole PS3 architecture is quite different from anything of the past, so programmers will need some time to get a grasp of the hardware fully. That's not to say that it's too hard to develop games for the PS3, but the Xbox 360 is easier to develop for initially.

Will it have an Online service like Xbox Live?

Although there will be online capabilities on the PS3, an actual online service itself will be in the hands of each game company. The Xbox 360 has a centralized standard Online experience. Some view this as the biggest advantage the Xbox 360 has over the PS3.

What PS3 exclusive games are coming out for the PS3?

PS3 Versions of Killzone, Gran Turismo, Socom, Metal Gear Solid, & Tekken to name just a few.

Will the PS3 have a hard drive?

It will have a hard drive. The real question is whether the hard drive will come packaged with the PS3 from the start, or if you will have to buy the hard drive separately. Or will they release 2 flavors of the PS3 like the Xbox 360... One with a hard drive, and one without.

Will you be able to play PS2 games on the PS3?

Sony has promised backwards compatibility with PS2 games, but now there is talk that the emulation required to pull this off might not be ready for launch. It's also unknown if all PS2 games will be playable on the PS3 if the do pull off this backwards compatibility.

Will PS2 controllers work on the PS3?

With Sony going for wireless controllers, it's doubtful that the older PS2 controllers will work with the PS3.
